The
objective here was a simple and inviting wall-hanging. For
the
letters, the woods
(wenge, brown, and cocobolo, orange/red) and calligraphic styles were
chosen to reflect the feel of the names. The cup
(basswood)
was given a very high gloss. The style and figure of the wood
(zebrano) chosen for the
ampersand suggest rising vapor. The background
(highly figured birdseye maple) was chosen for its beauty, but is
unbordered to keep
the visual weight on the elements. This design measures 30" tall.

The "Sam"
letters are in a plain sans-serif style with a rounded cross-section,
with the "a"
alone having a bit of flair. The "Zoe's" letters are a done
in a
classic seriffed Roman style with a beveled cross section which comes
to a ridge, with only the "Z" modified. The
ampersand is
rounded in all dimensions, including being undercut around the back
edges.

As is explained
on the "making
of" page,
the back could easily have been planed down to remove the original
tear-out and
wane, but it would have thinned the background too much - a more
important consideration.
